Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): South of the River

A glorious assortment to pick from

I started my day at Queen of Tarts, a charming café in the heart of Dublin. It’s a cozy haven with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and mouth watering pastries awakening my senses. The rustic yet inviting interior with wooden furniture and vintage decor creates a homely atmosphere perfect for a leisurely breakfast.

I indulged in their famous Irish breakfast, featuring sizzling bacon, plump sausages, perfectly cooked eggs, and buttery toast. All while the friendly staff made me feel like royalty with their impeccable service. For a sweet treat, you can try their signature French toast, made with thick slices of brioche soaked in a vanilla-infused batter and topped with powdered sugar and maple syrup instead. 

Every dish at Queen of Tarts is crafted with attention to detail, using locally sourced ingredients to ensure freshness and supporting the community. All in all, it is a breakfast spot that combines comfort, flavour, and a touch of elegance. 


St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Tranquil gardens

After a hearty breakfast I made my way to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a majestic landmark that embodies the cultural heritage of Ireland. Its stunning Gothic architecture with intricate carvings and soaring spires will leave you in awe. Inside, I was met by a sanctuary of marble aisles, vibrant stained glass windows depicting biblical and Irish history, and ornate stone work that adorns the walls. It’s possible to take a guided tour to uncover its 12th-century origins and its role in Irish history, including its connections to the renowned author Jonathan Swift.

Outside, I wandered through the serene gardens and meandering pathways, surrounded by monuments that inspired contemplation.

Marsh’s Library

Fairytale come true

A stone’s throw away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral I uncovered a hidden treasure in the heart of Dublin named Marsh’s Library, a time capsule that transported me to the 18th century. This beautifully preserved library is a haven for book lovers and history buffs alike, with its grand architecture and extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts.

As I entered Marsh’s Library, I was greeted by the sight of majestic oak bookcases and intricate ironwork, immersing me in an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity. The library’s collection includes works by literary giants like Jonathan Swift and William Shakespeare, waiting to be discovered among the shelves.

What sets Marsh’s Library apart is the interactive experience it offers. I had the opportunity to actually handle some of the books, turning their aged pages and connecting with the past in a tangible way. The knowledgeable staff are passionate about sharing the library’s rich history and are eager to engage in discussions about the rare books and their significance.

Quaint recap of Dublin’s heritage

A little stroll towards St. Stephen’s Green park led me to a hidden world of Dublin’s history at The Little Museum of Dublin, nestled in a Georgian townhouse on St Stephen’s Green. This beautiful museum provides a one-of-a-kind and personal experience, allowing visitors to connect with the city’s heart and soul through a stunning collection of antiques.

The museum took me on a journey through time, unveiling the often overlooked aspects of Dublin’s cultural heritage. Explore the lives of famous Dubliners, from literary legends like James Joyce and W.B. Yeats to the iconic band U2. Personal items, photographs, and interactive displays bring their stories to life, as I immersed myself in the city’s rich artistic legacy.

After the morning activities, it was time for lunch, and what better way to indulge than to Immerse myself in a literary and culinary adventure at The Winding Stair restaurant, a riverside restaurant that captures the essence of Irish cuisine in a charming vintage setting. Ascend the book-lined staircase and enter a world of nostalgia and inspiration, where vintage furniture, warm lighting, and picturesque river views set the stage for a memorable dining experience.

The menu at The Winding Stair showcases the best of Irish flavours, with dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Savour a traditional Irish dishes like beef and Guinness stew or creamy seafood chowder. Each bite bursts with authenticity and the freshest flavours, thanks to the restaurant’s commitment to supporting local producers.

Sure, Dublin has a ton of cathedrals and churches, but for something a little different, I headed into a world of history and mystery at St. Michan’s Church in Dublin, Ireland. This medieval chapel, hidden in the centre of the city, conceals a dark secret that has captivated visitors for ages. Bracing myself for an unforgettable experience as I descended into the crypts and came face to face with remarkably preserved mummies.

The atmosphere inside St. Michan’s Church is hauntingly captivating. The dimly lit interior and Gothic architecture create an ambiance that transported me to another time. But it’s what awaits beneath the church that truly sent shivers down my spine.

Explore the crypts and witness the perfectly preserved bodies of inhabitants from centuries past. These mummies, some of which date back more than 800 years, serve as a grim reminder of the passage of time. It’s an experience that both intrigues and unnerves, providing a look into a long-forgotten past.

The crypts are said to hold an otherworldly presence, with visitors reporting unexplained phenomena and eerie encounters. Escaping the city chaos for a brief moment, I headed up to Dublin’s hidden oasis at Blessington Street Basin. This tranquil gem offers a serene retreat for those seeking a moment of peace amidst the urban landscape. Step into a world where nature takes centre stage, with beautifully landscaped gardens, a charming pond, and abundant wildlife.

As I entered Blessington Street Basin, a sense of calm washed over me. The meticulously maintained gardens, bursting with vibrant flowers and lush greenery, create a picturesque backdrop for a leisurely stroll. Following the winding pathways that lead me through this serene park, immersing myself in the sights, sounds, and scents of nature.

The highlight of Blessington Street Basin is its charming pond, home to graceful ducks and swans gliding across the water. I let the tranquility of the surroundings envelop me, watching as the sunlight danced on the water’s surface, creating a mesmerising display of light and shadow. It’s the perfect spot to escape the city noise and find solace in the simplicity of nature.

Evening (08::00 PM – 12:00 PM): The Irish Nightlife

The Brazen Head

The day was almost over, but not before enjoying the warm hospitality, rich flavours, and authentic decor, by experiencing the magic of The Brazen Head, the city’s oldest pub and a culinary gem. This historic establishment not only offers a menu of mouthwatering traditional Irish dishes but, as it seems to be the theme here, transported me back in time with its unique atmosphere.

The moment I entered The Brazen Head, I was greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance. The traditional decor, including dark wooden furnishings, cozy nooks, and flickering candlelight, creates an authentic Irish pub experience that is hard to beat. The walls are adorned with memorabilia and photographs that tell the pub’s captivating history, adding a nostalgic touch to the atmosphere.

However, it’s the food that truly steals the show at The Brazen Head. Their menu featured a delectable array of Irish classics, prepared with care and attention to detail. From hearty stews and traditional lamb dishes to succulent seafood and perfectly cooked steaks, each dish embodied the flavours and culinary traditions of Ireland. To complete the experience, I of course had to pair my meal with a pint of the finest Irish stout and a smooth whiskey.

But The Brazen Head offers more than just great food and ambiance. It’s a place where stories are shared, laughter fills the air, and live music resonates through the halls. Join in the lively atmosphere as local musicians serenade you with traditional Irish tunes, creating an unforgettable experience that celebrates the heart and soul of Irish culture.

 

The Cobblestone

For a nightcap, I desired to experience the true spirit of Ireland at The Cobblestone, Dublin’s beloved music pub. This traditional Irish establishment in Smithfield is a haven for music enthusiasts and those seeking an authentic Irish experience.

The pub provided soul-stirring sounds of traditional Irish music to wash over me. Talented local musicians bring the lively sessions to life, creating an electrifying atmosphere that had me tapping my feet and clapping my hands in no time. But The Cobblestone offers more than just music; its cozy and rustic interior sets the stage for an unforgettable evening. Adorned with photographs, instruments, and memorabilia, the walls tell the story of Ireland’s rich musical heritage.

The pub’s commitment to showcasing the best of traditional Irish music is evident in every performance. From lively jigs and reels to haunting ballads, each note is a celebration of the country’s cultural heritage. The friendly staff added to the charm, and made me feel like I was part of the family from the moment I arrived.
